The novel coronavirus pandemic has impacted every aspect of our lives. From work and relationships to health and finances, there isn’t an area that hasn’t been impacted. And while much of the influence has been negative, this pandemic has given rise to some positive trends. For instance, there’s been a surge in the number of people trying outdoor adventure sports and activities, such as mountain biking.
The Mountain Biking Popularity Surge
Mountain biking has always had a pretty loyal following. But, for the most part, it’s a fairly niche sport that doesn’t necessarily appeal to the masses. However, the pandemic seems to have changed that. After being stuck in isolation for months, people are craving adventure, excitement, and socially-distanced fellowship with others. People want community – and mountain biking provides that.
According to one market research study, nationwide demand for mountain bikes has increased significantly. Sales were up 150 percent in April 2020 compared to April 2019. And even in 2021 with vaccines and much lower infection rates, demand continues to increase.
In addition to higher sales volume, mountain bike rentals are becoming increasingly popular. This option is ideal for people who maybe want to give it a try, but who aren’t quite ready to sink a bunch of money into the sport.
“We’ve definitely been selling more bikes than we ever have so that is resulting in a lot of new people out on the trails,” one industry insider says. “You definitely notice it when you’re out on the paths, you see more people out there than you probably ever have before. It’s great to see, we love it.”
It remains to be seen if this surge in popularity will hold steady or wane in 2022 and beyond.
After all, this nature activity is a safe, non-contact sport, and even if you ride on an adventure with a group of bikers or in a crowded place, wearing a high-filtration mask should keep you and others protected.
4 Gadgets Mountain Bikers Need
Whether you’re a grizzled mountain biking veteran or you’ve just started, having the right gear can make or break your experience. Not sure where to start? Here are some of the hottest gadgets on the market:
- Sawyer Mini Water Filtration System. One of the classic biker conundrums is figuring out how much water to bring on a ride. If you’re going on a short ride, a water bottle attached to the frame of your bike is probably enough. On longer rides, a backpack-style water system is great (but heavy). But what about multi-day rides where you’ll be camping off the trail? In these cases, it helps to have this mini water filtration system (which is capable of removing 99.99999 percent of all bacteria and protozoa from any water source. You can use it to drink water directly from the source, or by attaching it to most water bottles.
- Leaden Wireless Bluetooth MP3 Sunglasses. Enjoy listening to music or podcasts on your rides? Rather than messing with headphones and sunglasses, you can use these fully integrated wireless Bluetooth sunglasses to enjoy touch-free listening.
- Gloworm Alpha Plus 1200 Lumen Light. Night riding can be fun, but you must have the proper equipment. And for most beginners, trying to figure out what kind of light you need is confusing. For example, is it best to have a bike-mounted or helmet-mounted light? Well, with this light, you can choose either. It has everything you need in the box and even comes with rechargeable batteries for hours of enjoyment. It even comes with a remote that lets you easily control the light if it’s mounted on your helmet.
- Granite Stash Bicycle Chain Repair Tool Kit Set. Mountain biking can be unpredictable. All it takes is a tire hitting a rock from the wrong angle for something to break, bust, or burst. And if you come unprepared, that could put an end to your day and force you to take a long and strenuous hike back to your vehicle. But if you have the Granite chain repair toolkit, you can make easy trailside repairs. The best part about this tool is that it actually stores inside of your handles.
