Cisco Promises Hologram Video Calls in the Future: “Zoom on Steroids”

While the world is shifting towards the metaverse, Cisco is taking a step forwards by testing out hologram technology. Holograms play an important role in a virtual world since it would allow individuals to create a virtual representation of themselves.

While Zoom played a huge role in digital connection, Cisco is planning to take things one step further by providing an alternative to the readily available technology that connects people to the metaverse.

So far, creating holographs through AR technology has been limited due to current practices. With the addition of new cameras, Cisco has been able to upgrade the current practices to make a more realistic representation of participants.

Cisco Upgraded the Camera Setup Resulting in Higher FPS

Although Cisco used Microsoft’s technology for the hologram, they were still able to use it in a way that provided them with a more realistic approach to the metaverse. Aside from Microsoft, other companies like Apple could be working on AR headsets to provide users with access to the metaverse.

Cisco acknowledges the importance of holograms and has decided to upgrade the conventional 9-camera setup to a 60-camera setup. This allowed them to capture more angles resulting in a high-definition representation of the hologram users.

The project still used Microsoft’s second-gen Hololens AR glasses to give the participant access to the hologram. Although not the same as one would expect to see in sci-fi movies, the project was still able to replicate realistic virtual representations of the individuals.

The good thing about the project is that it was not only able to replicate a hologram setting, but it was also able to increase the frames per second (FPS) setting which made the results more realistic.

The image refresh rates were increased by 30 FPS to 60 FPS, doubling its graphics and improving its resolution. This is extremely important in making the metaverse since realism plays a huge part in how virtual representations are received.

Approaching the Metaverse with Realism

The goal of the metaverse is to provide a meta-reality or an alternate representation of reality in the virtual realm. The more realistic the holograms become, the more likely they are to be accepted by the human brain as reality.

Hologram use cases extend from the professional world to academia and not to mention, entertainment also plays a huge part. With the metaverse at large, more and more companies are working towards making the technology more realistic, adaptable, and scalable for use cases that include lectures, meetings, and even simple get-togethers.
