Unreal Engine has been one of the most popular tools for developers in creating their own games and this amazing MetaHuman Creator that Epic recently announced may change the landscape of 3D modelling as we know it.

Every week Epic Games treats us to free games and now they are giving more creative freedom for those who aspire to create 3D models of their characters whether it be from gaming or film. Here’s what we know so far.

Create Hyper Realistic Human Characters From Your Browser

Yes you’ve read it right! You don’t need a high-end PC to create your own models. In fact, according to Epic, the tool will be a cloud-based web browser app so you can edit your characters directly from the browser.

Additionally, you can use your created “metahumans” together with modern motion capture and animation techniques. It’s a delight to see that AI technology is already stepping up since machine learning is becoming popular nowadays to create these realistic images.

As Gizmodo would say, it’s like The Sims 4 but on steroids.

3Lateral and Cubic Motion Join Epic Games

This tool has been in development for quite some time now. As per their website, Epic teamed up with 3Lateral and Cubic Motion, both 4D animation companies.

They’ve discreetly showcased on what the MetaHuman Creator can do with Senua from Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice in this trailer below.

Additionally, Unreal Engine also revealed a video in 2018 showing their collaboration with these two 4D animation powerhouses alongside Tencent and Vicon to create a ultimate high-fidelity real-time digital character dubbed as Siren.

The digital character in this video was based on the likeness of Chinese actress Bingjie Jiang who was played by Alexa Lee. For those who are already well versed with the ins and outs of Unreal Engine, you can also test out the free MetaHumans project via the Epic marketplace

The future is getting brighter for the landscape of gaming as we may see more independent studios take advantage of this technology once Epic releases this tool this year.
