SpaceX Debris Hits the Snowy Mountains

A piece of debris found on farmland near the Snowy Mountains was actually part of a rocket launch from Elon Musk’s company SpaceX nearly two years ago.

A total of three pieces of debris were located in the period between July 14th and July 25th with one piece being described as looking like an “alien monument”, which to no surprise went wild in certain circles on Twitter.

Despite the look of the debris, experts identified the debris as coming from a SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft carrying four astronauts to the International space station in November 2020.

“The agency has confirmed the debris is from a SpaceX mission and continues to engage with our counterparts in the US, as well as other parts of the Commonwealth and local authorities as appropriate,” an Australian Space Agency spokesperson told the ABC.

“The agency is operating under the Australian Government Space Re-entry Debris Plan which outlines roles and responsibilities for key Australian government agencies and committees in supporting the response to space re-entry debris.”

This is a problem that isn’t going away anytime soon with more and more activity in Space. Indonesia and Malaysia were also victims of space debris recently with pieces of a Chines rocket hitting the Earth on July 30th.
