How We Researched the Best Air Purifiers

We spent close to 7 months researching and testing the best air purifiers Australia has to offer. To start off, we bought our test models from Amazon Australia, Harvey Norman, and JB Hi-Fi. Our review team evaluated 5 air purifiers in the first phase of the testing process.

The air purifiers were tested in a room that is approximately 35 square meters. Before starting each test, we measured the indoor air quality using a pollution monitor—the Autens Air Quality Monitor. This allowed us to create a baseline for each test that we conducted.

We then burnt a folded 10cm by 5cm cardboard in an ashtray to introduce pollutants into the air. After this, we tested the air quality again before placing the air purifier being tested in the room. All the air purifiers were centrally placed and left to run for an hour. There was a noticeable improvement in air quality with all the air purifiers that we tested.

For example, when testing the COWAY AIRMEGA MIGHTY AP-1512HH Air Purifier the air quality report was as follows; VOCs:1.2, PM10:39, PM1:21, PM2.5:28. After running the air purifier, we got the following results; VOCs:0.24, PM10:3.1, PM1:1.1, PM2.5:2.3.

For the second phase, we tested 6 air purifiers and another 6 in the third phase using the procedure highlighted above. Additionally, we compared the air purifiers based on noise level, filter type, and additional features. We used the Protmex Digital Sound Meter to test noise level for each air purifier. The Dreamegg HEPA Air Purifier had the lowest noise level reading.

Air Purifiers: Buying Guide

Testing the Philips Series 2000 Air Purifier in Person

Before you spend your money on an air purifier it’s a good idea to become familiar with the product, its benefits, and how it can benefit you and your family. Let’s take a look at the different types of air purifers, the health claims (and how true they are), what to look for in an air purifier, and how air purifiers work.

Different Types of Air Purifiers

With all the pollutants present in the air that we breathe, the use of an air purifier is now becoming more of a necessity. Indoor air pollution can be eradicated or reduced with the help of any of these different air purifier types:

HEPA Air Purifiers

Considered one of the most popular types of air purifiers around, HEPA purifiers clean the air with the help of a High Efficient Particulate Air (HEPA) filter. These purifiers have filters that can capture pollutants as tiny as .01 microns in size. This means that these filters can remove up to 99.9 percent of particulates in the air, leaving you with cleaner air. And since this purifier can work continuously, it can give you incrementally cleaner air as it works.

Ultraviolet Air Purifiers

This is a filter-less air purifier since it doesn’t use filters to clean the air. It uses a broad-spectrum UV light situated in a reaction chamber to clean the air it sucks in. Also called a UV light air purifier, this device can clean the air within a room by killing microbes that pass through it. Devices like this are said to eliminate microorganisms and particulates as small as .001 microns.

Ionic Air Purifiers

Ionic air purifiers are a type of machine that produces negative ions, which are then released into the air. Since pollutants floating in the air are often positively charged, the negative ions bind with them, causing them to become too heavy to stay afloat. These drop to the ground, essentially neutralised and rendered harmless. These air purifiers are great when you want to get rid of pollen, dust, bacteria, and viruses in the air but aren’t as effective when it comes to odours and noxious gases.

Adsorbent Air Purifiers

Adsorbent air purifiers are used to remove gaseous pollutants from the air via substances that are great at absorbing moisture as well as odours. Most of the time, these purifiers have HEPA filters in them as well, to facilitate the removal of particulates in the air. Adsorbent materials that are used to clean the air include activated carbon, volcanic rock, and baking soda.

Spray Air Purifiers

This type of air purifier uses air sanitising agents to clean the air that you breathe. These release cleaning agents into the air to not only neutralise odours but to also eradicate microorganisms that float in the air. It works more in the way of an air freshener rather than a purifier, but it does

The Benefits of Using an Air Purifier

There are many claimed benefits from air purifier manufacturers but do these claims have a basis in scientific literature. Let’s take a looks at some of the common claims:

The Improvement of Air Quality

This is the main purpose of an air purifier and the number one claim and selling point made by air purifier brands. This claim is shown to be true in dozens and dozens of studies, to the point where the claim is irefutable.

According to a study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, titled “Cardiopulmonary Benefits of Reducing Indoor Particles of Outdoor Origin: A Randomized, Double-Blind Crossover Trial of Air Purifiers“, air purifiers show a clear health benefit to using air purifiers in heavily polluted cities.

Their conclusion is as follows:

This intervention study demonstrated clear cardiopulmonary benefits of indoor air purification among young, healthy adults in a Chinese city with severe ambient particulate air pollution.

Another study titled “Efficiency of portable HEPA air purifiers against traffic related combustion particles” has shown that:

Exposure to diesel combustion particles is known to cause and exacerbate respiratory conditions, including asthma. High efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifiers can provide health benefits by reducing concentrations of these particles.

Finally, this study, written by Gediminas Mainelis, titled “Evaluation of ionic air purifiers for reducing aerosol exposure in confined indoor spaces” concluded that “…ionic air purifiers were shown capable to significantly reduce the aerosol concentration in the breathing zone of a human manakin especially in a confined space.”

Reduce Transmission Risk of SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19)?

A less common, but increasingly frequent claim made by some air purifier manufacturers is their ability to reduce the risk of transmission of Covid-19. This is a bold claim to make in the middle of a pandemic, so how true is it?

One study focussed on answering this question, titled “Testing mobile air purifiers in a school classroom: Reducing the airborne transmission risk for SARS-CoV-2“. In this study they have concluded:

In summary, the operation of mobile air purifiers in classrooms seems feasible as a practical measure that can quickly be implemented during an epidemic. In order to reduce the risks of aerosol transmission for SARS-CoV-2 air purifiers can form an important additional measure of precaution, especially in cases where no fixed ventilation systems are installed and when windows cannot be opened properly.

Are Air Purifiers Effective at Reducing Forest Fire Effects?

This is an unfortunate and increasingly common issue in Australia, with many brands claiming that their air purifiers are effective at minimising the impact of forest fire smoke. Is this true and if so, to what extent?

This study, written by Ryan W. Allen & Prabjit Barn, has shown that air purifiers should be used as a mitigating factor during such an event. Their conclusion states:

There is now substantial evidence that HEPA filter air purifiers reduce indoor PM2.5 concentrations and improve subclinical cardiopulmonary health indicators… Risk mitigation at the household level may be the primary option when emissions cannot be controlled at the source, such as during forest fires…

What To Look For When Buying an Air Purifier

Based on the scientific research linked above and our own expertise in the tech world, we recommend that you consider the following points before purchasing an air purifier:

HEPA Filters

It has been shown in countless studies that HEPA filters provide real and material benefits to the air quality of an enclosed space. It is able to effectively filter out particulates and pollutants down to a size of 0.3 microns. This type of filter is common in many types of air-related household appliances including stick vacuums and portable air conditioners.

If you suffer from allergies, asthma, or live in a high-pollution city, make sure you buy an air purifier with a HEPA filter.

Ionic Air Purifiers

Ionic air purifiers are shown to improve air quality, but to a much lesser extent than HEPA filter-based air purification units.  They also produce Ozone, which is detrimental to those with asthma. Our recommendation is to choose an air purifier with a HEPA filter. It may cost more in the long run due to replacing filters but they are more effective and safer.

UV Sterilisation

Some air purifiers utilize ultraviolet light to sterilise the air of mold, viruses, and bacteria. This is more of a marketing claim than a material benefit since UV light takes multiple minutes to kill bacteria, which is unlikely with this type of device.

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

If you’re interested in purchasing an air purifier, then it’s a good idea to have a basic understanding of how they work.

Air purifiers are relatively simple in how they work. At a basic level, they use a fan to pull in air, and then a filtering system, whether it be a HEPA filter or ionic. These filters are designed to capture air particulates and then move the purified air back into the room.
