The weak point of most weight tracking isn’t the scale. It’s the person who has to open an app, wait for it to connect and remember to save the reading. The Withings Body Smart is the one to buy if that’s the step you keep skipping.

Tom’s Guide and Fit&Well both name it their best overall choice, and both point to the same three things: useful body composition tracking, an app that’s easy to find your way around, and automatic Wi-Fi syncing. That last one is the reason it’s at the top here. A scale that sends the reading on by itself is a scale you’ll keep using.

Day to day, you get more than a weight. Withings lists body fat, muscle mass, visceral fat and water content, plus a resting heart rate reading, and it has separate modes for pregnancy, babies and athletes. Withings calls its weighing “high-precision” and specifies 50 g steps. Small steps aren’t the same thing as accuracy, but they do mean the display picks up small changes.

The catch is the price. It costs about three times as much as the Etekcity or the Xiaomi, and more than four times the RENPHO. We also found no owner rating for it at the retailers we check, so the recommendation rests on those two reviewers rather than on Australian buyers. It was number 9 in Digital Bathroom Scales on Amazon Australia at the time of writing.

Our verdict: If you’ve tried tracking your weight before and given up, this is worth the extra money. If you only want to check your weight now and then, the RENPHO does the basics for a fraction of the price.

2. Best rated by owners: eufy Smart Scale P2

Picking a gadget from a spec sheet is a gamble. Sometimes you’d rather know that a lot of people bought it and are happy. The eufy Smart Scale P2 has that going for it: 4.54 out of 5 from 71 owners at JB Hi-Fi. Of the three picks here with an owner rating, it has the highest.

What’s less clear is exactly what it measures. The listing we work from is thin. It mentions a 3D body model, which eufy builds from measurements you type into the app yourself, and the option to download or share your progress. It doesn’t give a weight capacity or a list of body metrics, so check those on the product page before you order. It costs more than the RENPHO, Etekcity, Xiaomi and Beurer, but less than the Withings and Garmin.

Our verdict: Buy it if you trust a strong owner score over a long feature list. Look elsewhere if you need a known weight limit or specific body figures and can’t confirm them on the listing.

3. Best budget smart scale: RENPHO ES-CS20M

It’s hard to know whether you’ll stick with app-based tracking until you try it, and nobody wants to find out on an expensive scale. The RENPHO ES-CS20M is the cheapest pick here by a clear margin. It was also number 1 in Digital Bathroom Scales on Amazon Australia at the time of writing.

Woman & Home recommends it as a budget-friendly scale with plenty of body composition estimates in a compact, easy-to-use design. That’s a fair summary of why it suits a first smart scale.

In practice, the scale shows your weight and your phone shows everything else. If you’re happy to glance at an app, that’s no hardship, and syncing with Apple Health, Samsung Health or Fitbit means the readings can end up where your other records already are. Unlimited profiles mean the whole household can use it.

One thing to know before it goes on a tiled floor: RENPHO warns against letting the corners of the tempered glass hit anything, and suggests wrapping them in something soft. Amazon is the only retailer in our data that stocks it, so check the warranty and returns terms before you order.

Our verdict: For most people trying a smart scale for the first time, this is the one to buy. Skip it only if you want body figures on the scale itself or need more than 180 kg.

4. Best for detailed body composition: Xiaomi S400

A body fat percentage on its own doesn’t tell you much. If you want to see visceral fat, metabolic rate and resting heart rate as well, without paying Withings money, look at the Xiaomi S400. Xiaomi says it produces a 25-item report after every weigh-in, using dual-frequency measurement, and it keeps up to 36 people’s histories separate.

TechRadar rates it best overall for straightforward setup and consistent tracking, and Fit&Well points to its support for multiple users. Two reviewers backing it is a good sign for a scale that costs about the same as the Etekcity. It was number 3 in Body Fat Monitors on Amazon Australia at the time of writing.

Few people will read all 25 items, but visceral fat and resting heart rate are two you may actually watch, and RENPHO doesn’t list a heart rate reading at all. Your history lives in Mi Home, so this suits you best if you’re happy to keep it there.

The limit is weight capacity. Xiaomi lists 150 kg, lower than the RENPHO, the Etekcity and the Beurer. It’s sold only through Amazon in our data.

Our verdict: Buy the S400 if you want more detail than the RENPHO’s 13 measurements, plus resting heart rate, for not much more money. If anyone in the house is near 150 kg, choose the RENPHO or the Beurer instead.

5. Best for linking fitness apps: Etekcity ESF-551

If your runs are in Google Fit and your meals are in MyFitnessPal, a scale that stores your weight in yet another app becomes one more thing to check. The Etekcity ESF-551 lists syncing with Apple Health, Samsung Health, Google Fit, Fitbit and MyFitnessPal.

Woman & Home calls it a versatile all-rounder, citing its 13 body metrics, the explanations in the app and the syncing with other health apps. That syncing is the real reason to pick it over the RENPHO. RENPHO doesn’t list Google Fit or MyFitnessPal, and Etekcity does.

Etekcity says the VeSync app builds diet and exercise plans from your habits. That’s a lot to promise from a bathroom scale, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to buy.

It costs a little more than the RENPHO, and it was number 5 in Digital Bathroom Scales on Amazon Australia at the time of writing. Among the retailers in our data, you’ll only find it at Amazon.

Our verdict: Buy it if Google Fit or MyFitnessPal is where you already keep your records. If you use Apple Health, Samsung Health or Fitbit, the RENPHO does the job for less.

6. Best body fat scale with results on the display: Beurer BF400B

Not everyone wants their phone in the bathroom at 6 am. The Beurer BF400B puts its body analysis on an extra-large display, so you can read your figures where you’re standing.

It also has the highest stated weight limit among the four picks here that list one: Beurer specifies 200 kg. Automatic user recognition means up to ten people can step on without choosing a profile first.

The owner score is the weak spot. JB Hi-Fi lists 3.8 out of 5 from 20 reviews, which is a middling result from a small group and not something to buy on. Buy it for the display and the capacity, not the rating.

Our verdict: Choose the Beurer if you want your figures on the scale or need a 200 kg limit. If your phone is always to hand anyway, the RENPHO, Etekcity and Xiaomi cost less.

Small weighing steps don’t prove accuracy. A scale that reads in 50 g steps can still be 500 g out. Xiaomi claims 100 g accuracy for the S400, but we have no independent accuracy test results for any of these scales, so we haven’t ranked them on accuracy. Weigh yourself at the same time of day, on a hard, level floor, and look at the trend rather than single readings.
