I run Mr Gadget, and I've been reviewing tech for Australians since 2018.
What I review hands-on
Some products I've used myself: review units that brands have sent me, and my own gear. Those get a full hands-on review, and there are 21 of them on the site so far. When one of those products appears in a buyer's guide, it carries a "Used hands-on" label that links to my review.
How the buyer's guides work
A buyer's guide covers more products than one person could ever use, so the method is hybrid. Where I've used a product, that counts. For every product, the guide also draws on:
- owner reviews and ratings at Australian retailers, weighted by how many people rated it, so a 4.6 from a thousand owners counts for more than a 5.0 from twelve;
- recommendations from independent reviewers, linked so you can read them yourself;
- live Australian prices and stock, checked automatically through the day;
- the maker's published specifications.
I don't claim to have used or tested a product unless I have. The full method, including how the ranking score works, is on how we choose products.
