For our readers who love to fish, here’s a product that may interest you: the Halasz Fishing Grip. But unlike most grips today, the Halasz takes it to another level by being a smart device. That’s right. Halasz is the first smart fishing grip.
The Halasz Fishing Grip was presented in CES 2020 or the Consumer Electronics Show in January and launched on Kickstarter on the 5th of October 2020. Thus, you can try and see the product yourself. But what is it and what can it do? Let’s find out below.

Review Quick Links
Seasonal fishing closures were established to protect species that are vulnerable during their reproduction season. For instance, here in Australia, it is prohibited to take, land, or possess baldchin gropers from November 1 to January 31 and pink snappers from September 1 to January 31. So when fishing and you caught any of these species, you are required to return them in the water unharmed.
Aside from that, some anglers are mostly into fishing for the experience. Thus, they follow the catch-and-release culture, and they too will return their catches in the water after getting its measurements. However, this can be difficult without the right equipment.
When you hold the fish to simply take its measurements, you might damage the fish’s gills and internal organs. Not to mention that you might also hurt yourself. One way to avoid all these is with the Halasz fishing grip. With it, you can measure the fish, take a photo, and take it back to the water. Thus, making the process faster.
This equipment is also perfect for fishing tournaments and for anglers who want to show off their latest catch.
What is the Halasz Fishing Grip?
The Halasz Fishing Grip is a device that can measure the weight and length of your caught fish. This is more convenient since you don’t have to carry several gears with you like tapeline, fishing grip, and scale. By having all three functions in one device, you have fewer things to worry about. More importantly, you can save time as you don’t have to rummage through your things to find what you need.
Now, there are other fishing grips with such features, such as the Piscifun Professional Lip Gripper. But what makes Halasz unique is that it is the world’s first smart fishing grip, and it can connect with your smartphone through Bluetooth. So not only will it show the information on the LCD screen of the device, but it will also digitize, send, and record the data in the Halasz application.
Other than that, this grip is extremely durable. It is waterproof, dust-proof, and can withstand drops. You can also use it for any type of fish. Overall, these make Halasz a great fishing accessory.
What is the Halasz App?
The Halasz App is a platform where all the data from your previous catches are recorded. You can also use it to take a photo of you and your latest catch. The app will then add the fish’s measurement information to the photo and other details such as the weather, location, date, etc. Then, you can share the picture on the app or other social media platforms you use.
So basically, the Halasz app is the Instagram alternative for those who love to go fishing. Ideally, you can use it to communicate with other anglers, create and join clans, or even compete with each other. You can also use it to join or host fishing tournaments, granted that all participants are using the fishing grip.
The idea of the app being a fishing exclusive social media platform is great. However, it is still in its developing stages, so it might take a while before you see people on the application. The Halasz app is available in both the App Store and Play Store.
What’s It Like to Use?
The Halasz Fishing Grip is simple and easy to use. You just have to turn it on and connect it to your phone through the Halasz app setting. Once a connection is established, the device will automatically pair with your phone the next time you use it.
To measure a fish’s weight, hold the device, and pull the fish up. Then, pull the tapeline to measure the length. It’s that easy. What’s even better is that the product is equipped with a barcode scanner sensor and an RPM counter sensor. It also uses an adjustable resistance and strain gauge sensor, which minimizes its error rate to ±1.0mm. So even without the smart features, the Halasz makes a pretty good measuring tool for fishing.
Now, let’s head over to where the Halasz Fishing Grip doesn’t necessarily shine – the price. Basing from its Kickstarter campaign, the Halasz has a suggested retail price of $129. When we compare it to the Piscifun Professional Lip Gripper, which is priced at AU$24.89 or around USD$18, the Halasz is pretty expensive. Even against digital models like the Berkley Digital Fish Scale, which costs $36.99, it’s still very pricey.
Of course, this is expected since the Halasz is a smart device and others are not. Also, the Halasz comes with an application that offers cool features. However, if you simply need a device that can quickly grip and measure your catch, then clearly, other cheaper products can do that.
If you’re interested in trying out the product, you can join its crowdsourcing campaign and get it at a much lower price.
The Halasz Fishing Grip would be a great addition for every angler’s set of gears. The ability to measure the length and weight in one go certainly makes everything easier. But what makes it more special is the application that comes with it – which we believe is what you are paying for.
The idea of being able to communicate and connect with friends, family, and other people who are as passionate about fishing as you are is amazing. Now is that worth the extra $100? Well, that’s for you to decide.
