EZVIZ's three-lens solar camera lands at Harvey Norman for $669.95

EZVIZ's HB90f Triple 3K Kit has three lenses, a solar panel and no subscription. It's A$669.95 at Harvey Norman. Our take on who it suits.

One camera covers the front door. Then you want the driveway, and the side gate, and the bit of the yard near the shed, and suddenly you’re up a ladder every few weeks charging four batteries. EZVIZ says its new HB90f is built for exactly that kind of bigger block.

The HB90f Triple 3K Kit went on sale today, 30 October, at Harvey Norman for A$669.95. It’s a battery camera with three lenses that rotate, an 8W solar panel in the box, and recording to a 32GB microSD card that’s also included, so there’s no monthly plan to pay for.

Our take

Three lenses is the real idea here. EZVIZ says the top lens watches a wide area, and when it spots a person, the two lower lenses swing over and zoom in to follow them. The top and bottom units turn on their own, so you can point them at the same spot or at two different ones, like the driveway and the gate. On a big block or acreage, that could replace two cameras. On a small suburban front yard, it’s more camera than you need.

Read “12x mixed zoom” carefully. That’s EZVIZ’s figure, and “mixed” means it blends optical and digital zoom without saying how much of each. Digital zoom just crops the picture. Don’t expect to read a number plate at the far fence until someone has tried it.

No subscription is a genuine plus. People, vehicle and familiar-face detection run on the camera itself, according to EZVIZ, and the footage saves to the card. Plenty of rivals lock smart alerts or cloud history behind a monthly fee, and over a few years that adds up to more than the camera.

The solar panel only helps where there’s sun. EZVIZ’s own release says charging depends on sunlight and how it’s installed. A wall under deep eaves or facing south won’t get much. The always-on recording mode also drops to a time-lapse when nothing is happening and only records full video when something moves, which is how it stretches the 10,400mAh battery.

Why it matters right now

The price is the catch. In our outdoor security camera guide, the eufy E340 Floodlight also has a wide and a zoom lens on a mount that turns all the way round, records 24/7 with no monthly fee, and was A$449 at JB Hi-Fi on 25 October. The difference is that the eufy needs mains power, while the HB90f runs on battery and sun. So you’re paying about A$220 more to skip the electrician.

If you only need to cover a couple of spots and don’t need the tracking, the Connect SmartHome 2K solar twin pack was A$114 at The Good Guys on 25 October for two cameras. It’s a much simpler setup with fewer owner reviews behind it, but it shows how much of the HB90f’s price is the clever lens.

Summer is close, and the long sunny days ahead are when a solar camera works best. But Black Friday is on 27 November, and security cameras get discounted every year. A brand-new camera at full price four weeks out from the big sales is worth a pause. Our deals page tracks price drops on the cameras we cover.

Who should buy, and who should wait

Buy if you have a bigger property with no power where the camera needs to go, a sunny spot to mount the panel, and you’re done paying monthly fees for camera apps.

Wait if your yard is small, the wall you need gets little sun, or you can run a power cable, in which case a wired camera does more for less. And if you’re not in a hurry, see what Black Friday brings.

We haven’t used the HB90f yet. EZVIZ says review units are available, so a hands-on review may follow.
